The 25th installment of the U.S. reality TV show Big Brother debuted on August 2, 2023, airing on CBS in the United States and Global in Canada. This season kicked off following a special 25th-anniversary episode that was broadcast on July 26. Julie Chen Moonves returns as the host, overseeing a cast of contestants referred to as HouseGuests. These participants live together in a monitored house, cut off from any outside contact, as they vie for a grand prize of $750,000.
Format
Big Brother is a reality TV show that features contestants, referred to as HouseGuests, living in a specially-designed house equipped with cameras and microphones that document their actions around the clock. These contestants are isolated from the outside world during their stay. They use a secluded space known as the Diary Room to share personal reflections on their experiences inside the house.
Each week involves various competitions aimed at securing power and immunity within the house. The week kicks off with a Head of Household (HoH) competition, where the winner gains immunity from eviction and the power to nominate two fellow HouseGuests for possible eviction. Following this, six HouseGuests, including the current HoH, the nominated contestants, and three additional HouseGuests selected at random, compete in the Power of Veto (PoV) competition. The winner of this competition can choose to either rescind one nomination or let them stand. If a nominee is removed, the HoH has to promptly nominate another HouseGuest as a replacement. The winner of the PoV is also safeguarded from becoming a replacement nominee.
When eviction night rolls around, the HouseGuests cast their votes to evict one of the nominated individuals in the confidential setting of the Diary Room. The HoH and the nominated contestants do not participate in this vote. In case of a tied vote, the HoH is responsible for breaking the tie. The HouseGuest with the majority of votes is then evicted.
The final nine evictees make up the Jury, who are sequestered separately and eventually determine the season’s winner. While the Jury can watch competitions and ceremonies, they are not privy to any strategic conversations or nomination details. Additionally, the audience has the opportunity to bestow an “America’s Favorite HouseGuest” award, which is open to all evicted HouseGuests except those who have left voluntarily or were removed due to rule violations.
